Why the Blog?
Like a lot of other South Africans I love movies. From my early days as a kid watching Loony Toons, Gummi Bears and Brave Star I’ve watched hundreds of films. Over the years I’ve developed an appreciation of film, to the point where I’ve endevoured to theme my film watching according to director, genre or country.
Recently I realised that, while South Africans love film, we don’t have a genuine, reputable source of movie reviews and movie industry news. Think about it – when you want to find out about a film where do you go? My guess would be IMDB, or Wikipedia, or Yahoo or some other international source. The only local content we have is either generated by the movie houses (which is a little dodgy if you ask me) or provided by local print publications, which give you two lines of info taken from some press release they received last month.
So I’ve decided to pioneer the way in providing movie news with a local flavour. This blog will cover a range of movie news, from personal reviews of the latest films, to international movie news (confirmation of new productions, character castings and more), to feedback on local cinema experiences (reviews of service, facilities etc). I’ll also try and provide a few choice morsels from the local movie scene, which is set to grow dramatically over the next few years.
I hope that the content here provides a bit of enlightenment and I welcome any feedback or additions that you might have.
It’s about time locals began rocking what we in the industry like to call “buzz.” nice work. A useful resource.
Awesome blog Gilo. I just stumbled across it today and am hugely impressed with your movie tastes. Thanks for all the great input and keep up the good work.
